Web and E-mail Software
-
Coravue CMS includes both the Web personalization engine and the e-mail personalization engine. In addition to both of these application server products Coravue CMS includes modules for content management, e-commerce, affiliate management, and clickstream/profile analysis.
Browser Interface
-
Coravue CMS is a Web-based system that allows content creators and managers to use a Web browser to enter, edit, and schedule Web pages and e-mail messages. This means that your Web management team can use PCs, Macintosh, or Unix computers without having to purchase individual client software for each person.
Any special formatting within the body of a Web page's content can be entered through the CMS, so traditional HTML editors can be used to create that material. This allows each person to work with the HTML tools they are most comfortable with. In addition, special HTML editing software is available that turns a standard Web form into an interactive content development tool.
As Web content is entered, it is assigned to appear within a particular section of the Web site. If a Web page needs to be moved to a different section, it's as easy as clicking on a different section from a list of sections. In addition, entire sections of pages can be moved to be part of another section, easily creating a heiractal that makes it easy for visitors to drill down to the information they need.
Template Formatting
-
Material from the content database is merged into graphical templates that define how Web pages should look. This means Web pages are created automatically "on the fly" by incorporating text, images, and multimedia based on the design of the page and the personalization rules specified by the developers.
You can use any popular Web page design package to create any number of templates. Most sites use a small number of templates since the same formats are used for all articles, product descriptions, section pages, and other types of content.
E-mail messages use the same template approach to formatting messages, whether they are text or HTML e-mails.
Workflow Management
-
Many organizations now create content for Web sites and e-mail newsletters with a team of people, each with a role and a responsibility during the publishing process. Coravue CMS helps manage the workflow process by allowing each person to have access only to the sections of the CMS appropriate for their role so that proper entry, editing, review and approval occurs.
Each Web content record has publish dates and expiration dates, and e-mail content has its own publish date. This means that each content object can be on the Web site within a range of publish dates, and also used in an e-mail newsletter with a different publish date. And, since a content record can store objects such as a headline, short description, and full text, each object can be used differently on the Web and in text or HTML e-mail. In other words, content is reusable.
The standard configuration for Coravue CMS has three roles defined, however the system can be customized to have as many roles defined as are needed. The standard system has:
- Writer - Enter and edit content but not publish content
- Editor/Publisher - Edit existing content and schedule material for publishing on the Web site and in e-mail newsletters
- Designer - Create Web page templates, create new sections for content, and assign templates and content forms to sections
Since many Web teams work in different locations, special e-mail notifications can be created to notify members of the team about a variety of conditions, such as the creation of new content by writers and tabulations of Web and e-mail activity.
Personalization
-
One of the strengths of Coravue CMS is that it is built upon a powerful personalization engine that allows content to be tailored based on the profile data stored for each registered person in the profile database.
There are a variety of ways to personalize Web and e-mail content using both fixed and variable rules.
Fixed personalization rules are entered into the Web or e-mail template by the designer and are acted upon every time the page is activated. For example, a designer can specify that the person's first name should be used on a page if it is available, otherwise use a generic greeting.
Variable personalization rules are entered into the Rules Manger via a Web form and are available for developers to use in Web and e-mail templates. A single content template can use multiple rules in the Rules Manager to select from a wide variety of content.
This means that a wide variety of features are built in - not added on - that give content managers both flexibility and control over what content is displayed to each person. The benefit to the reader is that each page and each e-mail can be generated dynamically based on their individual profile to deliver the content most appropriate for their individual needs.
Collecting Profile Data
-
Profile data can be collected for each use in these ways:
- Answers supplied by the reader via Web forms
- Tracking readers as they move within a Web site
- E-mails sent to the server to subscribe or unsubscribe to a newsletter, or to respond to questions included in newsletters
- Clickthrough tracking from e-mail newsletters to any Web page
User Identification
-
Using personalization to deliver tailored content to loyal audience requires being able to identify each person not only within a single session, but also when they return to the site later. There are several techniques that can be used to identify people across sessions, such as automatically recognizing them when they return to a site and immediately personalizing their experience.
Cookies can be used that store a person's unique Coravue ID on their computer to to recognize the person when they return to the site. We realize that some Web users are concerned about allowing cookies to be stored, so we also store a person's ID within the URL they bookmark.
Sometimes it is necessary to authenticate that a person who has registered at your site is actually the person who owns the e-mail address they supplied. In this situation, the site can e-mail a unique "authentication" URL to the user and instruct them to go to that Web page to be permitted extra access. Once they access that URL their profile is updated to indicate they have been permanently authenticated.
When you add sections to your site that requires an extra level of security, such as credit card or government issued identification numbers, the site can require that users enter a password to access that material.
Database Design
-
The SQL database used by Coravue CMS allows any number and size of fields of data to be collected and stored. This means the user profile database can store as many items about each person as you would like to collect in order to use Web or e-mail personalization.
In addition, the content database can have as many content tables as is needed, and each database can have as many fields as needed. As your content needs expand, it's easy to add additional databases that can be used anywhere on the site or in e-mail newsletters.
Content Syndication
-
Many times the content at a Web site could add value to other sites but the challenge of distributing content can make it difficult to work other Web sites.
With Coravue CMS content can be syndicated to appear on other Web sites using graphical templates similar to the ones used on the main Web site. These templates can be private branded for the partner's site, or co-branded to have your logo, too.
And, since the usage of syndicated content can be tracked, it's easy to develop an effective revenue model.
Affiliate Program
-
The ability to link a web of sites to form a larger information resource has lead to the affiliate program revenue model that compensates affiliate sites for activity or sales by people referred from the affiliate sites.
The affiliate program module provides for automated affiliate registration, and the tracking of visitors that come from affiliate sites. In addition, affiliate reports allow affiliates to monitor their referred traffic and commissions earned.
The new relationships with affiliates, and the people they refer, can increase traffic and create a larger loyal audience.
E-commerce
-
Guiding customers to the products that meet their needs and allowing them to purchase products online has become important for many consumer and business sites. The Coravue CMS e-commerce module includes customizable templates that make creating an online catalog easy. The features include:
- Catalog with multiple options and quantity pricing for each SKU
- Cross-selling and up-selling based on profile and content rules
- Packing slips via Web interface or as data to input into an offline warehouse system
- E-mail order confirmation and shipment notification
