It's important for several reasons to track e-mail messages that are returned (i.e., "bounced"). The main reason is to provide accurate clickthrough response rates for e-mail marketing campaigns.
There are two types of bounces:
- Hard bounces - These are e-mail addresses that are not valid because the address was entered incorrectly, the user has abandoned the mailbox, or has left the company and not programmed their account to forward mail to their new (or personal) e-mail address.
- Soft bounces - These messages are returned because of a temporally problem with the Internet, the user's ISP or company mail server, or the user's mailbox is full.
It's important to distinguish between these two types of bounces so users with soft bounces can continue to be sent mail, while users with hard bounces can be unsubscribed from further mailings. In addition, some marketers use bounced messages to trigger telephone or postal mail communications to contact individuals and obtain an updated e-mail address.
The Coravue CMS reads returned messages and differentiates between soft and hard bounces, then flags the user profile database accordingly.
